How to use Pinterest Story Pins to INCREASE your reach

I’ve been talking on Instagram about the benefits of using Pinterest to leverage your business, increase visibility and offer valuable information and education to your audience.

One new tool for increased reach that Pinterst rolled out in beta form the past few months is Story Pins. You may have noticed a notification to try out Story Pins if you are a creator. If you don’t have it yet, you should see it rolled out pretty soon.

What are Story Pins?
A story pin is a multiple page pin that you can swipe through on the Pinterest Platform.

Most importantly it does not have an external url linked to it which means you get all of the information about the topic right there on Pinterest. The story pin will not drive traffic to your site but rather drive viewers to your Pinterest page, allowing them to see your content and follow you directly on Pinterest.

The teams at Pinterest outlined in early 2020 that they are looking to grow their community and keep people ON the platform. Which makes sense as they’ve put lots of push into Pinterest Creators over the past year. The thought is that they build a robust community on the platform, keeping content there, growing accounts and followership. This would then lead to more sponsored content and ad dollars.

Benefits of using Story Pins
If you already have your Pinterest page setup and strategy in place, Story Pins are a great next step for expanding your reach. Story Pins are getting top visibility here in the early beta testing phases and are great for generating visibility and boosting Pinterest reach.

I have noticed that in the first half hour of posting a Story Pin is prime time for visibility, capping out within the first 3 hours. So choosing when you post that Story Pin is key. Choose those high traffic times when you know people are on the platform. Analytics show that Saturday evenings between 8 and 11pm are the high traffic times. Depending on your subject matter that could vary. The key here as is with all social platforms is test, test, test. See what works for you and adapt.

Use Cases for Story Pins
The most exciting thing about Story Pins –to me, is that it is another way to recycle previously created content. If you design your stories in Canva or Illustrator like me, you probably have folders of story slides just sitting in your DropBox ready and waiting to be Story Pins.
Take those slides and simply upload them to story pins, give them a searchable title, description and you are all set.
Great topics for Story Pins are:

  • How-to’s - Recipes, DIY’s, Tips

  • Image slideshow - Portfolio work, Shopping

  • Educational information - Services you provide, Tips on your expertise.

  • Storytelling

How to create a Story Pin
Creating a Story Pin is pretty easy from your mobile Pinterest app.

  1. Tap the PLUS (+)  in the middle of the bottom of your app

  2. Select - Add Story Pin

  3. Select the type of Story Pin you wish to make: Choices are limited here. You have Recipes, Craft + DIY or Blank List. If you choose ‘Blank List’ you can make your own list of what people will need or include a description.

  4. Then select the graphics you would like to upload from your photo album. I create mine in Illustrator first and then save them to my DropBox as jpegs and then to my camera roll)

  5. Next you’ll add your title - keep searchability in mind!

  6. Then add it to a board - put it on a relevant board already in your library.

  7. Then add tags – these are the keywords that you would like your pin to show up within.

  8. Then select publish and you are all set! OR save it as a DRAFT for a more optimal posting time.

Keep an eye on those numbers. As I mentioned, they move fast within the first half hour.

As with all social platforms you want to drive traffic to them from your other traffic sources. Let your audience know you are adding new content to Pinterest and they should follow you there as well. Let me know how this works for you!

Please note that Story Pins are still not available yet to create in Tailwind and pre schedule.
